The Figgy

Overview

The Figgy could be considered a next-generation play couch.  The Nugget was one of the earliest play couches and, interestingly enough, was actually a Kickstarter project designed to be a dorm room couch.  Figgy was also a Kickstarter project but was led by a product engineer and a mom of 6.  We love this story because after reviewing this product, we can tell they really designed it for play.  The differences feel like how Apple is to the classic desktop.  Figgy’s high-end fabrics, kid-centric design, and trend-right colors really set the bar high for playcouches.  Figgy also uniquely uses a Velcro attachment system and sturdy rectangle bolsters that work well for play and fort building.  Figgy’s use of Figgy Foam also hits a sweet spot between the strength of builds and softness for comfort.

What’s Included?

The Figgy comes with four (4) base cushions, two (2) rectangles, and an optional wedge. All base cushions are a thick 4.5” and are very sturdy.

The Figgy base cushions are detachable and have a patent-pending Velcro connection system. You can connect any number of base cushions.

Quality/Durability

We evaluated Figgy’s high-end velvet and luxe flatweave fabrics (think high-end sofa fabric) but also received a sample of their performance microsuede.  We were blown away by the quality of these fabrics.  The velvet and flatweave both repelled water!  When we inspected the sewing and stitching, we were impressed.  The flatweave fabric had surged edges, that tells me they really value quality.  The Figgy feels like a piece of furniture you would buy at Crate and Barrel.

We questioned whether the Velcro could really hold our kids in testing and were impressed.  We made their suggested three-point triangle build (Velcro connects three pieces in a triangle) and our kids sat on top without it collapsing.  The Velcro was very strong but not so strong that we couldn’t disconnect it, we heard that their earlier releases were super strong but they seem to have found a sweet spot for strength versus usability.

We looked on Reddit and Facebook to see what parents were saying about The Figgy and most users highly recommended it based on quality.  A small number of customers complained of minor defects, but in every situation, other customers said that the customer service team was really good, and it looks like Figgy either repairs or replaces issues.

Foam Source

Figgy states that they use FiggyFoam TM, which is a proprietary blend of comfort and sturdiness.  Although we couldn’t find any mention of this type of foam on the internet, we did see that the foam is CertifPUR-US certified and made in the US.  This is very good news because it means that the foam isn’t from an overseas source that has to be compressed for long periods of time.

The website states that FiggyFoam is...

  • Made without ozone depleters

  • Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants

  • Made without mercury, lead, and heavy metals

  • Made without formaldehyde

  • Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission

  • Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)

Fabric

As mentioned earlier, there are currently 4 different fabric lines: Classic, Microsuede Classic+, Luxe Velvet, Luxe Flatweave.  Although we did not test the classic, the other fabrics seemed much more expensive fabrics than any product we tested.  We especially liked the water-resistant properties of the velvet and the flatweave.  Figgy also makes waterproof liners, which makes a lot of sense.  Since this is a kid’s product, things will be spilled on it.  The peace of mind is great to be able to throw the covers in the washer and not have essentially a gross sponge in our living room.

We noticed that Figgy also has two collaborations.  Figgy is currently on Caden Lane’s website offering covers that you can color like a coloring book, this is similar to Caden Lane’s Colorme pajamas.  Figgy also shows up on Newton Baby’s website offering a crib mattress cover.  This is a super cool idea because it is a great way to convince your kiddos to graduate out of the crib and into the bid kid bed!

Figgy states that its fabrics are Greenguard Gold and Oeko-Tex certified.  This checks the safety boxes in our mind because this states that the fabric is not giving off any VOCs, is free of formaldehyde and is basically allergen-free.

Cost

The Figgy starts at $269+ for the base set with 6 pieces, which is very similar to Nugget.  There are options to upgrade fabric and add waterproof liners, which we recommend.  Yourigami is cheaper on price but as we found, it really isn’t in the same field as Figgy and Nugget.

Overall Value

The Figgy gets a 10/10 for being durable, eco-friendly, made in the USA, having sturdy foam that is good for older kids, velcro-connection, equally thick bases, and cover options.  If you’re buying a play couch for kids and want them to be entertained for years this is the obvious choice.
